Mesh and circular forms
I have been using net to create some circular forms, but they have been very long and skinny. I have been playing with both net and organza, but the organza looks a bit too shiny. The net is able to hold its form a lot more than the organza, the organza is also a lot shinier than what I would like. I want to transfer the tests from my crit, with the text, onto the mesh. I would then suspend this fabric with writing suspended from the ceiling, above an arangment of speakers. From my crit I received feedback that encouraged the speakers to become more spatialised, so I am hoping to utilise a larger area to be able to walk around and in the speakers. I feel it would be effective for the form to be large enough to enter a little bit once suspended from the ceiling. Lauren suggested I use PVC, I think this would good, I’m going to reintroduce pipes and this infrastructural element to juxtapose the softer elements of the fabric and words. The idea of these words is important to me because I have taken them from private messages, gossip, and a sharing of experience through voice messages. It feels important to recognise the act of communicating rather than the words themselves, there is significance in the silence and absence of words, and the ability to rely on these connections through silence and dependence. Voice and words can become paradoxical when removed from there original context of communication; they become representational as images instead of elements of sentences and the communication becomes the secondary thing. They become shapes with associations and people try to place meaning to things that lack it. With the sound, through removing defining elements and creating a shifting of noise between speakers, I am trying to communicate the weight of these inbetween spaces, structural and verbal, and the importance of reverberation and comfort in having the presence rather than the comfort of the exact words. I am thinking about voice and agency and play, and how there is power is taking away the applied purpose of these objects/systems/structures.
