Vapour Installation

I was feeling unsure how to progress my work from the previous installation, but based on the feedback I received, I have decided to continue work on the pipes which were laid out on the floor. I am still thinking whether their layout should be random or hold some significance like the pipe which were installed onto the wall, but I think I need to create a projection to add a stronger sense of vapour and movement within the work, reflecting the utility of my initial gadget, the kettle. I plan to do this through an animation, however I have never animated before so this is a goof opportunity for me to learn. I have downloaded Adobe Animate, and through a short YouTube video I have learnt how to make simple objects move. I have given the circle a gradient effect in order to make it feel softer and less dense. I have kept them a light grey so that they hopefully don’t take away from the installation but subtly add a layer of depth and an extra point of interest.

At this stage I have animated a few circle paths on multiple layers, duplicating them and having them play and different times to intensify their movement.

I have merged the layers together for me to then duplicate them to further intensify the movement and lengthen the track to about 30 seconds. I have also created a version with a black background as this might be better whilst projecting so only the circles become illuminated.

I am yet to decide whether I want this to be projected onto the same pvc pipes from my previous installation, or if I would like this to be projected onto longer pipes. Maybe I will print on a couple of longer pipes just to see how I like it, and disperse these amongst the pipes which I have already made. I also need to see if there is a projector available for me to actually install my work, and for me to see which version of the animation looks best on the white wall, the white or black background. I’ve had a chat with some friends and they have suggested I make the pipes taller so that will be something i test, to see how tall the pipes can get before I can no longer print on them.

I decided to add some more PVC to the installation, but instead of printing on them I would leave them as long pipes. I chopped up a few pieces slightly longer and shorter than a metre.

I then went and sourced a projector to install my work, and I’m glad that I changed the background to white, because in the first video you can see the harsh outline created by the white background, but the black appears transparent on the wall.

Installation Setup

Projection with white background

Final installation, animation with black background, it’s a 30 second video, but it looks a bit like a GIF, and I think this would be different if there were people walking amongst it.
